Set up science courses- Private Universities urged

Story: Musah Yahaya Jafaru

THE Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has asked private universities to introduce more science-based courses, since the development of the country hinges mainly on the contribution of science.
He again asked them to extend their campuses to the other regions, since they were currently concentrated only in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.
He made the call when a nine-member delegation from the Pentecost University College (PUC) called on him at the Castle, Osu, yesterday.
The delegation, led by the Rector of the PUC, Rev Dr Peter Ohene Kyei, was at the Castle to congratulate the Vice- President on his election victory and invite him to the first congregation of the university this Saturday.
Mr Mahama noted that the private universities offered courses mainly in Business Management and the Humanities.
He said there was the need for them to invest in science-based courses, since science was crucial to efforts to move the country’s economy forward.
He said the government was concerned about the concentration of private universities within certain limited jurisdictions.
He mentioned the Greater Accra and the Eastern regions as some of the beneficiary regions and said the three regions of the north, as well as the Volta, Brong Ahafo, Western and Central regions, had been left out.
Vice-President Mahama, therefore, charged private universities to “spread out” and establish universities in the other regions.
Mr Mahama again urged owners of private universities to reduce their tuition fees.
